Reception (4+)

Getting off to a Great Start!

The Squirrels Nursery provides your child with the best possible introduction to the exciting world of learning. Our close links with the Reception team at Warwick Prep and regular transition visits mean that your child is well-prepared for their move into ‘big school’.

Our four Reception classes are made up of children from The Squirrels Nursery continuing their journey at Warwick Prep and a small number of new children, each with a fully qualified teacher and specialist teaching assistant. Our small class sizes of around 20 pupils allows us to closely support each child with their learning, encouraging them to progress at their own pace and support them as they embark on their journey through the Warwick Schools Foundation.

A Broad Curriculum

The children follow a varied, topic-based curriculum that encompasses the themes and principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage. This is carefully balanced with the need to prepare your child for formal learning as they move through school.

We follow Read, Write, Inc, a structured phonics scheme that enables us to teach children to their own ability and ensure progress for all.

Play is incredibly important for children’s learning too and we have access to a large range of resources both in and out of the classroom. We want your child to enjoy coming into Reception every day, to develop a love of learning, but most of all have lots of fun!

Parent Links

We encourage close links with our parents including contributions to the Learning Journals and homework. The communication between home and school is key, and parents can talk to us at the beginning and end of each school day. We also make use of our Wow and House cards to celebrate learning outside the classroom!

Real-life Learning Experiences

Broadening the children’s experiences is important, and educational visits such as our trips to Ryton Pools and Warwick Arts Centre are planned into the curriculum, providing important learning opportunities. We also involve the outside community in our learning and enjoy visits from the Fire Service, Police, Guide Dogs and various other services as part of our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic – a firm favourite with the children.
